First Tuesday class in a while

Worked on sai tonight starting with moving drills:

One drill was moving forward in zenkutsu-dachi, blocking down, striking down, blocking down again and following with gyaku-zuki. Repeat the routine on the other side.

Another was stepping forward into jodan-uchi, followed by an around-the-head strike, then around-the-world strike and z-block. Finally, another gyaku-zuki before stepping forward and repeating on the opposite side.

Last was to step forward left into zenkutsu-dachi and punch up with both hands. Then step forward with the right (facing left) into jigotai-dachi and sweep around and down to the right. Then step forward with the left (facing right) into jigotai-dachi and strike across the body up to the left and then the same to the right. Finally turn back left into zenkutsu-dachi and repeat the routine starting with the double strike.

Practiced Fukyugata Ⅰ with sai as a group before breaking out to work on Hanagushiku-no-sai. Sensai pointed out that the last strike should be up and forward like a motion in Rohai. When stepping out of the kosa-dachi to the left, the right foot should slide over so you are upright rather than in jigotai-dachi.

Practiced ido kihon and kihon undo. Dan ranks are expected to know the order of these exercises. Following that, partnered with Dave to work on yakusoku kumite Ⅰ-Ⅳ from both right and left sides. Next we broke into a groups (me, Dave and Zack) with each member selecting and performing one basic, one intermediate and one advanced kata for the others. I chose Pinan Shodan, Naihanchi Nidan and Ananku. Dave commented that he’d like to have my chudan shuto-uke. In Ananku, I need to work on keeping the wari-uke out in front of me. I seem to be crossing my arms drawing my fists in toward my body before throwing them back out forward.

In the last part of class, performed Shiromatsu-no-kon. I need to continue to work on it, but I have the basic routine mostly down.
Also worked on Pinan Sandan bunkai (write down the order)

Wednesday weapons class

Class led by Zack

In weapons class, started by working on kihon bo. Zack had me lead and count. At yoi, the feet are as in the Pinan kata, and the first move is a kasa-uchi. Practiced Shiromatsu-no-kon a couple of times in groups of three.

Worked on a blocking drill with Lara. The attacker steps forward and punches right jodan-uke. The defender blocks left (up and across body to protect face with palm out) in diagonal jigotai-dachi then attacks with uraken either to opponents arm or face, and counter punches gyaku-zuki turning hips into zenkutsu-dachi to generate power.

Also practiced an augmented gedan-uchi (as in pinan yondan/godan) drill to defend against a knife attack. after the second strike, you turn your hand over, step forward getting to the side of the attacker driving him forward and down by controlling the attacking arm.

Performed all the Fukyugata and Pinan kata as well as Ananku.

Back after a hiatus

Hiatus from blog posts, not karate.

Class led by Sensai.

In weapons class worked on sai and bo. For sai, we broke into two groups of four with each person performing the kata of their choice for the others. I picked one I’ve practiced more lately – Sai Dai Ichi. Sensai commented that I need to work on keeping my thumb at or below the weld on strikes. I need to keep my back leg straight in my zenkutsu-dachi.

Worked on Matsubayashi-ryu bo kata again. Practiced the Four directions (kihon bo) kata as well as Shiromatsu-no-kon.

Performed Naihanchi Ⅰ- Ⅲ, and Ananku kata changing direction 90° each time.

Worked on yakusoku kumite Ⅰ-Ⅴ with Zack

Last Class Before Canada

Class led by Sensai.

Worked on Naihanchi Ⅰ-Ⅲ and Pinan Godan.

I have a tendency to rush through the Naihanchi kata – need to work on slowing down and emphasizing the technique.

The middle section of Naihanchi Ⅱ has a yoko-shuto-uke.

In Naihanchi Ⅲ, the second move is a kizame-zuki followed by uchi-uke. The block should be distinct, don’t hurry through this part.

Bo training

Practiced Shiromatsu-no-kon

basic attack/defense bo routines

In the black belt class, reviewed Fukyugata Ⅰ/Ⅱ and Pinan Shodan/Nidan Bunkai. Still need a ton of work here.

Sensai finished with a quick explanation of Pinan Sandan bunkai. Middle section through the end features mostly right handed attacks.

7/15

Kata class led by Zack.

Worked on Fukyugata Ⅰ through Pinan Sandan and Naihanchi Shodan with emphasis on using good technique and power.

For weapons training, broke into two groups, one to work on bo and the other to work on sai. I chose the sai group which worked on sai-dai-ichi.

In the black belt class worked on Shiromatsu-no-kon.

First July class

Class led by Sensai.

Went through all Fukyugata and Pinan kata.

Also worked on Pinan Sandan bunkai with Jessan:

In the opening part, the attacker steps zenkutsu-dachi left side punching left. Defender blocks chudan-uchi then blocks same punch cutting up and right. The attaker kicks from the rear (right) foot and the defender blocks cutting down right.

The second part, the attacker again zenkutsu-dachi left side punching left. Then pulls back and chambers both fists as the defender attacks nukite-zuki. Then reaches foward with the right hand and grabs the defender while stepping back left (with small slide) to jigotai-dachi. The defender turns, and punches oi-zuki. Attacker steps back right punches left and immediately right. The defender counters with a right front punch under the first, then turns to elbow block the second.

The third part the attacker steps shizentai-dachi right and front punches. Defender steps right jigotai-dachi and blocks right with inside elbow block followed by uraken. Repeats the same with left, then again to the right, this time with a wrist grab after the elbow block.

Worked on kihon bo (Shinjo Sensai) Shiromatsu-no-kon, and Shushi-No-Kon in the way Taira Sensai may likely teach it in Canada.
