Snowy Wednesday

Class led by Zack.

Lots of excercise – pushups, situps laps around the dojo. Kicks to the bag and punching the makiwara.

Aggressive stretching.

Worked on yakusoku kumite Ⅰ-Ⅴ with Tom.

Worked on Fukyugata Ⅰ/Ⅱ bunkai

Finished up with kihon bo kata.

After class, practiced Hanagushiku-no-sai with Zack and Alvin.

Notes:

In the first two moves, the palm of the front hand is down. Think of the move as searching (could also be hooking).

Wednesday weapons class

Class led by Zack

In weapons class, started by working on kihon bo. Zack had me lead and count. At yoi, the feet are as in the Pinan kata, and the first move is a kasa-uchi. Practiced Shiromatsu-no-kon a couple of times in groups of three.

Worked on a blocking drill with Lara. The attacker steps forward and punches right jodan-uke. The defender blocks left (up and across body to protect face with palm out) in diagonal jigotai-dachi then attacks with uraken either to opponents arm or face, and counter punches gyaku-zuki turning hips into zenkutsu-dachi to generate power.

Also practiced an augmented gedan-uchi (as in pinan yondan/godan) drill to defend against a knife attack. after the second strike, you turn your hand over, step forward getting to the side of the attacker driving him forward and down by controlling the attacking arm.

Performed all the Fukyugata and Pinan kata as well as Ananku.

Back after a hiatus

Hiatus from blog posts, not karate.

Class led by Sensai.

In weapons class worked on sai and bo. For sai, we broke into two groups of four with each person performing the kata of their choice for the others. I picked one I’ve practiced more lately – Sai Dai Ichi. Sensai commented that I need to work on keeping my thumb at or below the weld on strikes. I need to keep my back leg straight in my zenkutsu-dachi.

Worked on Matsubayashi-ryu bo kata again. Practiced the Four directions (kihon bo) kata as well as Shiromatsu-no-kon.

Performed Naihanchi Ⅰ- Ⅲ, and Ananku kata changing direction 90° each time.

Worked on yakusoku kumite Ⅰ-Ⅴ with Zack

First August Kata Class

Arrived late and jumped in during Naihanchi Shodan. Went on to do Naihanchi Nidan a couple of times, and finally worked on Sandan with Jessan and Lara. All of them felt awkward due to lack of practice lately.

Worked on applications of portions of Naihanchi Shodan. The opening two moves could be used to block a front punch and then pull the attacker in to finish. The moroto-uke could be used in the same way. You need to step in and turn to the side to make it work. Think about the motion starting with an inside uchi-uke. Sensai said that any point in the kata where your hands come together could be a trap. Also can be a block and simultaneous attack.

Sensai had us perform the other kata. We worked on one part of Pinan Yondan (kosa-dachi to the ¾ turn). He also reiterated how to step into, turn and slide when delivering the iaigoshi -dachi in Pinan Godan. In Ananku, you need to rotate your hip out when turning from outside uchi-uke to naname-zenkutsu-dachi.

Worked on Yamanni-ryu bo basics, the four strikes, and the four directions basics.

First July class

Class led by Sensai.

Went through all Fukyugata and Pinan kata.

Also worked on Pinan Sandan bunkai with Jessan:

In the opening part, the attacker steps zenkutsu-dachi left side punching left. Defender blocks chudan-uchi then blocks same punch cutting up and right. The attaker kicks from the rear (right) foot and the defender blocks cutting down right.

The second part, the attacker again zenkutsu-dachi left side punching left. Then pulls back and chambers both fists as the defender attacks nukite-zuki. Then reaches foward with the right hand and grabs the defender while stepping back left (with small slide) to jigotai-dachi. The defender turns, and punches oi-zuki. Attacker steps back right punches left and immediately right. The defender counters with a right front punch under the first, then turns to elbow block the second.

The third part the attacker steps shizentai-dachi right and front punches. Defender steps right jigotai-dachi and blocks right with inside elbow block followed by uraken. Repeats the same with left, then again to the right, this time with a wrist grab after the elbow block.

Worked on kihon bo (Shinjo Sensai) Shiromatsu-no-kon, and Shushi-No-Kon in the way Taira Sensai may likely teach it in Canada.

5/27

Class was led by Sensai.

Worked on applications of the opening moves of Fukyugata Ⅰ, as well as bunkai for the first two parts of Fukyugata Ⅰ/Ⅱ and Pinan Shodan. Broke into groups and performed our highest kata. I felt like I had a reasonable presentation of Ananku. Power and pace were good, but I thought my kiai were a bit late. Afterwards, Alex commented that he’d never seen it before, and Dave told me he thought it was good. I think I saw a nod from Sensai.

Practiced Fukyugata Ⅰ with kama. Sensai had us enhance the kata by changing several parts. One was to augment the gedan-uke in the kata by blocking down with the back of the kama first, and then rolling over and slicing down. Another change (during the first sequence of three front punches) is to block down simultaneously with the backs of both kama and then them swing up and over in a looping pattern to hook an attack from the opposite side. Still another is to reverse the grip for the jodan-uke so the hook part of the kama is facing up and out (in order to catch an attack). Finally, think about free-form additions to the kazami-zuki, jodan-zuki and opening section front punches. All of this is in preparation for eventually working on Kishaba No Kama.

Worked briefly on Kihon Bo Ⅰ again this week.

Return of the bo

Class led by Sensai.

Worked on Fukyugata Ⅰ/Ⅱ and Naihanchi Shodan/Nidan

Bo finally made an appearance in Tuesday class this year. Also a new basic bo kata (I’ve referred to it as Kihon Bo Ⅰ since one never knows if there is another on the horizon.) This comes out of the Matsubayashi-ryu lineage as opposed to the don-yu-kon Ⅰ/Ⅱ kata which originate in Yamanni-ryu.
