Sat 1/24

Class led by Sensai.

Worked on footwork Ⅰ-Ⅲ

All should be performed on one level.  In Ⅰ , the hips should be facing forward. For Ⅱand Ⅲ though, you should turn somewhat to the side and face the opponent.

Partner drills moving across the floor slides then slide-step incorporating footwork Ⅲ at the end to trap a leg or arm.

Kata through Pinan Yondan

In Pinan Shodan, the turn from Nukite-zuki to Chudan soto shuto-uke should be tight. The blocking knife hand should be high enough to block the oncoming punch with the side of the hand or wrist. Definitely not with the fingers which would happen if the block is too low.

Morning Training

Worked on basic footwork including the hands. I think I do better at Ⅲ than the others. I still tend to think too much about the feet, and need to work on better executing the blocks and delivering the strikes. Generally, that means that I haven’t really practiced enough to be comfortable with the technique.

Practiced other basics – front punches in jigotai-dachi, kaku-zuki also in jigotai-dachi. Try to work on extension on the punch and allow the natural tension in the the body to return the punching hand to a chambered position. Use the other hand along with hip rotation to accelerate the punch.

Performed katas from Fukyugata Ⅰ through Pinan Sandan. Sensai said not to hold the final jodan-zuki of Fukyugata Ⅰ any longer than any other move. After delivering the punch, return to yoi. Then, broke into groups of three (with Tom and Sensai Palmer) each performing one kata of our own choice. I chose Pinan Yondan because it’s not my favorite and I tend to practice it less than most of the others.

Did a partner drill with Tom where you try to touch the other’s shoulder and the partner blocks. When successful, you switch and become the defender and the partner tries to touch.

6/21

Worked on moving basics including footwork Ⅰ-Ⅲ

hands for Ⅰ comprise an uchi-uke followed by gyaku-zuki

Ⅱ starts with a covering downblock using the hand opposite the pulling foot

hands for Ⅲ are a circular block starting in the opposite direction to that of the feet

Most of class was spent working on timing in various partner drills with Tom including one using sayu-barai-uke to block a front kick.

Practiced yakusoku kumite Ⅰ-Ⅶ (except Ⅴ) All attacks in pre-arranged sparring start from the right.

Class was unusually light on kata, with just a single renzoku performance of Pinan Shodan.

5/17

Class was led by Sensai. Focus was on stretching, basic attacks (uraken, shuto, haito) and basic footwork Ⅰ-Ⅲ . Also punching and blocking routines derived from Fyukugata Ⅰ.

In one drill, the attacker does a front kick with the right foot from kumite dachi, lands and punches kizame-zuki. The defender steps back blocks the kick with gedan-uchi and the punch with outside uchi-uke.

Continuing the theme, we worked on Fyukugata Ⅰ bunkai in groups of four, where one person performs the kata and the others rotate in and out acting as the attackers. This could be further changed by rotating in others to perform the kata, or having the defender and attacker switch roles in the middle of the bunkai.
